Be sure to read carefully which forms of ID you must present to the DOT to take the test.
Select which branch you would like to visit to take the test.
Choose the second service “Knowledge Exams…”
Select a date and time that works for you and has been approved by your supervisor.
Enter your contact details and create your appointment.
-
Once you have passed your knowledge test at the DOT and received your permit, call Karen VanSickle at (515) 531-0631. She will sign you up for training and get you your $50!
2. Practice & Study
-
With a permit, you are allowed to drive a commercial vehicle specific to the type of permit you obtained when accompanied by another driver who has a CDL valid for the same type of commercial vehicle.
If you feel like you need an opportunity to practice driving, contact your supervisor.
-
You should also be studying for and practicing your Pre-Trip Inspection as much as possible as this is usually the hardest part to pass.
Click here for a CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Study Aid.
We recommend watching this CDL Pre-Trip video 2-3 times before testing.
3. Train & Test with CDL-Now
-
Upon receiving your permit, you will be enrolled in training and testing. You will receive an email from “CDL-Now” regarding your training information and testing date.
Your Drive Test and Review will be scheduled AFTER you pass your Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Tests. The ELDT Test is a new DOT requirement to obtain a CDL.
The day of your driving test, you will practice on the same truck that you will be using for your test. This includes practicing backing right on the testing lot, driving the actual route, and review pre-trip inspection.
-
Once you have your CDL from the DOT, call Karen VanSickle at (515) 531-0631 to schedule a time to go to the main office in Granger to have a copy of your CDL made, finish some paperwork, and get your $250! Congratulations!
